David has been representing me and working on my case for 7 years now, and I couldn't ask for a better counsel. He is attentive, makes it very easy to understand the legal terms and implications, and makes the entire process feel a lot less stressful. David lays out the steps, consequences and expectations, and always advises on the best course of action.

We were referred to David by family after using another lawyer for a separation and custody matter who made things worse. David quickly picked up the pieces and represented my partner through the process. David was dealing with a very difficult ex-spouse on the other side, but he saw through her antics and identified her issues quickly.

Retainers and billing, explained

Straight answers about how a file is opened and how fees work, before you ever sit down with us.

Before work can commence on a file, clients enter into a retainer agreement with the firm. It's a written document laying out the terms of the solicitor-client relationship, including the services to be performed and the associated costs. Both the client and lawyer sign it and receive copies.

As part of the retainer agreement, clients deposit an agreed sum into the firm's trust account, known as a retainer payment. These funds are held in trust and applied against invoices, which also include disbursements. The amount varies depending on the complexity of the matter and estimated time required.

Most lawyers, including NuriLaw, allocate billable work in six-minute increments, ten to an hour. Any time spent on your file is recorded, or docketed, and the hourly fee is billed in tenths of an hour accordingly.

In addition to docketed hourly fees, clients reimburse the firm for expenses incurred on their behalf, including administration fees, long distance calls, postage, deliveries, travel, photocopying, government filings, search charges, and agent fees for investigations or registrations. HST applies to all disbursements.
